Teknikk og formspråk - Jukka Mäkelä
Jukka Mäkelä is a painter, whose works are dominated by the communication between run acrylic paint and thick black coal. Mäkelä’s abstract images may have been inspired by a highly concrete and figurative occurrence as experienced in nature or a small detail, an interesting shape. Mäkelä’s interest in working at the border zone of two- and three-dimensionality makes his paintings almost sculptural; things happen stereoscopically, through layers.
When Mäkelä takes on printmaking, he works intensively – several plates are worked simultaneously. He treats his aquatint plates by spraying or painting the acid onto them, and creates the various shades of grey and black by varying the time of the acid-exposure. Speed and intensity, as well as the surprises and the joy of discovery that is experienced during the printmaking process are all captured in the finished image
