Elvar Örn Kjartansson (f.1972)
Elvar Örn Kjartansson has been traveling around the world for many years working full time on his craft as a photographer. This has led him all over the globe, from the extreme heat and dust of Death Valley, California and the Namib Desert in Namibia; to the freezing cold of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard and the stormy conditions on the Fimbul Ice-Shelf, Antarctica. His perspective of the earth changed when he captured his first frame of Iceland from the air. The colors and patterns of the earth from above constantly draw him back up. "Part of being a photographer is to bring something tangible of value into the world. For me capturing the image is just the beginning of the journey of the photograph. I have to master the art of print making so that I can end the journey.”
Elvar Örn Kjartansson - Artist statement
I see myself as a conceptual artist with photography as my main output. I feel that concepts and visions supported by a silent philosophy in the background makes a project stronger. Most of the time my projects starts as an idea on a piece of paper, there the vision starts to form. After the visualization comes the method, how will I capture it, in which format? As the development progresses, the concept and philosophy of the project forms around it. Part of being a photographer for me is to bring something tangible of value into the world. Capturing the image is just the beginning of the journey of the photograph. I have to master the art of print making so that I can end the journey.
